Throughout the century that the ABA Standing Committee on Legal Aid and Indigent Defendants has been in existence, its members have made many contributions to the development of legal aid and indigent defense in the United States.
As of the 100th anniversary of its founding, the Committee has had twenty-nine chairs, eight of whom became ABA presidents, along with four other SCLAID members who had previously served as ABA presidents.
The Committee has also gone through three name changes since its creation in 1920. What follows is a sampling of highlights from that history.
